Current Affairs of 5th August – National News


1. Khandwa, MP will host the construction of the largest floating solar power plant in the world.
◉ In Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa, the largest floating solar power plant in the world will be constructed. with a view to addressing the region’s electrical issues and boosting the state of Madhya Pradesh’s capability for power production.
◉ By 2022–2033, Khandwa will have a floating solar power plant that can produce 600 Megawatts of electricity.

2. Third Anniversary Of Article 370’s Abrogation
◉ The third anniversary of Article 370’s repeal is August 5th. On this date in August 2019, the Union Government annulled the provisions of Article 370, which granted special status to the former state of Jammu & Kashmir.
◉ The State was further split into Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, both of which are Union Territories.
◉ As stated in Article 370, a “temporary provision” that affords the State extraordinary autonomy, Jammu and Kashmir used to be the only state in the nation having a separate constitution.

3. The National Anti-Doping Bill 2021 was approved by Parliament.
◉ The National Anti-Doping Bill 2021 has been approved by parliament.
◉ The Bill forbids the use of doping by athletes, athlete support staff, and other people.
◉ According to the new law, breaking anti-doping regulations can lead to results being thrown out, including the loss of medals, points, and prizes, as well as a time limit on participation in a competition or event.

4. India adds 10 more wetlands to its list of Ramsar reserves.
◉ There are now 64 Ramsar sites in India thanks to the addition of 10 additional wetlands.
◉ There are six new sites in Tamil Nadu and one each in Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha among the ten new locations. The designation of these areas would aid in the management, conservation, and efficient use of wetlands.

5. In July, Russia overtakes China as India’s third-largest coal supplier.
◉ With imports jumping by more than a fifth compared with June to a record 2.06 million tonnes, Russia has moved up to the third-largest position among coal suppliers to India.
◉ Behind Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, and the United States—with Mozambique and Colombia alternately appearing in the top five—Russia has historically been the sixth-largest coal exporter to India.
◉ Since Russia invaded Ukraine, India’s imports from Russia have increased by roughly five times to over $15 billion.

6. Israel Innovation Authority and Adani Enterprises have joined to work on technical advancements.
◉ The Adani Group’s business incubator, Adani Enterprises, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration on technological advancements with the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA).
◉ The agreement calls for the development of a “cutting-edge innovation platform” that will give Adani Arms access to technological solutions offered by Israeli start-ups, with the collaboration supporting particular innovation projects.


International News


7. The First Moon mission was launched from South Korea.
◉ The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, commonly known as Danuri, was successfully launched by South Korea from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
◉ As its orbiter boarded a SpaceX Falcon-9, South Korea became the seventh nation in the world to launch a mission to the Moon.
◉ Together, NASA and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute are developing this mission (KARI). The SpaceX-launched satellite will touch down in December 2022.

8. Sweden and Finland were given the go-ahead to join NATO by the US Senate.
◉ The NATO membership of Finland and Sweden has been accepted by the US Senate.
◉ Finland and Sweden steered clear of military ties before the crisis between Russia and Ukraine. With the most recent conflict, the nations did, however, take a crucial step toward joining NATO and a 74-year-old agreement for mutual defence between the US and its European allies.
◉ Currently, for a country to join the NATO Alliance, all 30 members must consent. Over half of the members have ratified Finland and Sweden’s membership applications, which they submitted about three months ago.

9. The Repo rate increased by 50 basis points at the 4th RBI Monetary Policy Review.
◉ The Reserve Bank of India has not changed its prediction for retail inflation for the current fiscal year, which is 6.7%. The liquidity adjustment facility’s (LAF) policy repo rate has been raised by 50 basis points to 5.40 per cent with immediate effect.
◉ The policy repo rate was increased by RBI for the third time in a row. Shaktikanta Das, governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), is in charge of the committee’s monetary policy.

10. Oil India Limited has selected Ranjit Rath as its new CMD.
◉ Ranjit Rath has been chosen to serve as Oil India Limited’s next chairman and managing director (CMD) (OIL).
Sushil Chandra Mishra succeeded him.
◉ Rath was the chairman and managing director of Mineral Exploration & Consultancy Limited, which was part of the Ministry of Mines, prior to taking over as CEO of Oil India Limited.
◉ Additionally, he was the Managing Director of Bharat Gold Mines Limited, the Chief Executive Officer of Khanij Bidesh India Limited, and the Director General of the Geological Survey of India for the Indian government.

11. Near October, India and the USA will conduct a large-scale military exercise in Auli, Uttarakhand.
◉ In October, an extensive two-week military exercise involving India and the USA will begin in Auli, Uttarakhand, in the midst of a rapidly changing regional security environment.
◉ From October 14 to October 31, the exercise “Yudh Abhyas” will be held for the 18th time.
The latest iteration of the drill took place in Alaska, United States, in October of the previous year.
◉ Over the past few years, the two nations have also signed significant defence and security agreements, such as the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) in 2016, which permits their militaries to use each other’s bases for supply repair and replenishment as well as fortifies deeper cooperation.

12. Murali Sreeshankar wins silver in the long jump at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
◉ At the Commonwealth Games 2022, Murali Sreeshankar won silver in the men’s long jump to give India its second athletics medal. In a tense men’s long jump final, Sreeshankar leapt to 8.08m on his fifth attempt to place second to Laquan Nairn of the Bahamas.
◉ Nairn also had the highest jump of 8.08 metres, but his second-best jump of 7.98 metres was higher than Sreeshankar’s 7.84 metres. South African Jovan van Vuuren (8.06m) won bronze.

13. Sudhir won the gold medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
◉ At the Commonwealth Games 2022, Sudhir won the gold medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting competition. In his first attempt, Sudhir, an Asian Para Games bronze medalist, lifted 208 kg; however, in his second attempt, he increased the weight to 212 kg in order to score 134.5 points and break the Games record.
◉ Ikechukwu Micky Yule took home the bronze with 130.9 points, while Christian Obichukwu earned the silver with 133.6.
◉ The 27-year-old Sudhir, who suffers from a polio-related disability, thereby started India’s medal count in the CWG’s para sports competition.

14. Johnny Famechon, a former world boxing champion from Australia, dies.
◉ Johnny Famechon, a former Australian featherweight boxing champion, has died. He was 77. For more than 20 years, he was involved in professional boxing. Of his 56 victories, 20 were knockouts. He also had six draws and five losses.
◉ The Australian boxer’s WBC points decision victory over Cuban Jose Legra at London’s Albert Hall in 1969 stands out as his most memorable world title triumph. Famechon boxed professionally for over 20 years, compiling a record of 56 victories, 20 of which came by way of knockout, six ties, and five defeats.
