Current Affairs of 23rd August – National News


1. In Uttarakhand, India’s first space observatory will be built.
◉ Digantara, a start-up in the space industry, will construct India’s first commercial space situational awareness observatory in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.
◉ It will track celestial bodies orbiting the planet as small as 10 cm.
◉ India will be able to monitor all space activity, including that of military satellites circling the area and space debris, with the aid of the space situational awareness (SSA) observatory.

2. In Pune, Jitendra Singh debuted the country’s first hydrogen fuel cell bus.
◉ Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, unveiled the first hydrogen fuel cell bus made in India in Pune.
◉ The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the business KPIT Limited developed the bus.
◉ Hydrogen and air are used in the fuel cell to produce energy, which powers the bus.
◉ There are nearly a million diesel buses operating on long-distance routes in India, and each one emits an average of 100 tonnes of CO2 every year.

3. Dr. S Jaishankar unveiled the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Paraguay
◉ Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Paraguay was unveiled by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.
◉ Additionally, he went to the famed Casa de la Independence, where the South American nation’s independence movement was launched more than 200 years ago.
◉ He will be visiting Argentina on his first official trip to South America.

4. The 23rd Central Zonal Council meeting was presided over by Union Minister Amit Shah in Bhopal.
◉ The 23rd meeting of the Central Zonal Council was presided over by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Bhopal.
◉ He also lay the cornerstone for the National Forensic Sciences University’s Bhopal campus.
◉ In accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s objective for the extension of the banking network in rural areas, the Central Zonal Council held its 23rd meeting to discuss the substantial progress made toward the establishment of banking services within five kilometers of all villages.
◉ The 112 Emergency Response Support Service (ERSS) is the single number emergency line in the country and is active in 35 States/UTs.

5. GMR established an airport-focused Blockchain Center of Excellence.
◉ A Blockchain Center of Excellence (CoE) for airports has been established by GMR Group.
◉ It will give startups access to the necessary labs and infrastructure for the creation and validation of ideas and services.
◉ Additionally, it will make thought leadership, research, & training programs for upgrading skills in the blockchain industry possible.

6. Greece withdraws from the EU’s “enhanced monitoring” system
◉ Greece has declared its departure from the “enhanced surveillance framework” of the European Union.
◉ Greece puts an end to 12 years of suffering and grants the nation more flexibility to make its own policies.
◉ Under the “increased surveillance” framework, Greece’s economic performance and policies have been extensively watched since 2018.
◉ The surveillance framework was designed to make sure that policies supporting sustainable economic growth were kept in place.

7. Debasisa Mohanty appointed senior scientist and director of NII The National Institute of Immunology’s director has been named Debasisa Mohanty (NII).
◉ He is currently employed by the NII as a staff scientist.
◉ In recognition of his contributions to biosciences, the government presented him with the National Bioscience Award for Career Development in 2009.

8. Rajesh Verma has been chosen as President Droupadi Murmu’s secretary.
◉ cadre in Odisha a 1987-batch IAS official Rajesh Verma has been chosen to serve as President Droupadi Murmu’s secretary.
◉ He takes over for the outgoing Kapil Dev Tripathi, an IAS officer from the 1980 batch.
◉ Verma previously worked as the chief secretary to Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik and is currently the Secretary of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

9. Pramod Bhagat and Sukant Kadam, two para-swimmers from India, won the gold medal.
◉ The Thailand Para-Badminton International competition was held in Pattaya, where Indian para shuttlers Pramod Bhagat and Sukant Kadam took home the gold medal.
◉ In the men’s doubles championship match, they triumphed over Dwiyoko & Fredy Setiawan of Indonesia.
◉ At the Thailand Para-Badminton International, India won a total of 17 medals. In the competition, the Indians won a total of 4 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze medals.

10. Gold medalist Antim Panghal at the U-20 World Wrestling Championship
◉ Antim Panghal, a 17-year-old wrestler, won the gold medal in the women’s 53 kg division at the 2022 World U20 Wrestling Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
◉ Antim Panghal, a 17-year-old wrestler, became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in the U20 world wrestling championships by taking the top podium spot.
◉ Atlyn Shagayeva of Kazakhstan was defeated by her.
◉ The Hisar district of Haryana includes Antim.
◉ The U-20 World Wrestling Championship was in its 45th year.

11. International Day for the Remembrance of Slave Trade and its Abolition is observed on August 23.
◉ Every year on August 23, people all across the world commemorate the slave trade and call for its abolition.
◉ The purpose of the day is to inform people about the history of the slave trade and its repercussions.
◉ The revolt that was a major factor in the end of the transatlantic slave trade began on the night of August 22 to 23, 1791, in Santo Domingo (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic).
◉ This day, which was designated by UNESCO, was first observed on August 23, 1998.

12. Abdul Gaffar Nadiadwala, a seasoned producer, died
◉ Recently, renowned filmmaker Abdul Gaffar Nadiadwala passed away.
◉ Over 50 Hindi films, including the 1965 feature “Mahabharat” and popular comedies from the 2000s like “Hera Pheri” and “Welcome,” were supported by Abdul Gaffar Nadiadwala.
◉ In 1953, he founded his business producing movies and creating media entertainment.
