Current Affairs of 17th August – National News


1. Operation Yatri Suraksha was launched by Indian Railways.
◉ Operation Yatri Suraksha, a national operation, has been started by the Indian Railway Protection Force (RPF).
◉ Several actions are made as part of this program to give passengers 24-hour security.
◉ A number of measures are being implemented as part of this project to offer passengers unassailable security, including train escorting, visible presence at stations, CCTV surveillance, surveillance on active criminals, collecting of intelligence about the offenders, and subsequent action.

2. India International Seafood Show will be held in Kolkata in 2023.
◉ After a 16-year hiatus, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) will organize the 23rd India International Seafood Show in Kolkata from February 15 to 17.
◉ It would give Indian exporters and foreign buyers of the nation’s maritime products the perfect forum for engagement.

3. The Odisha Cabinet authorized the Millets Mission for Rs. 2808.39 billion.
◉ The promotion of millets in the state’s tribal regions has received approval from the Odisha State Cabinet, which is presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, in the amount of Rs. 2808.39 crores.
◉ To bring millets back to farms and dinner plates, the Government of Odisha established the Odisha Millets Mission in 2017. It was the result of discussions between the government, academic institutions (NCDs), and civil society organizations (RRA Network, ASHA Network, and local NGOs).
It is the first agriculture initiative of its sort with a focus on raising consumption in Odisha.

4. Defence Forces, RBI, and PM Office Ranked as the Most Reliable Institutions by Ipsos India
◉ According to an Ipsos India survey, the three institutions that Indians have the highest faith in are the defence forces, the RBI, and the prime minister.
◉ The Central Bureau of Investigation came next, and the Supreme Court of India came in fourth (CBI).
◉ 2,950 persons, including women, were questioned for the poll by Ipsos India.

5. The UK becomes the first nation to certify the Omicron vaccination
◉ The Covid-19 vaccine for the Omicron form has been approved in the UK, making it the first nation to do so.
◉ The “bivalent” vaccination produced by Moderna as a booster for adults has received approval from the UK’s medical regulator (MHRA).
◉ Based on clinical trial data that demonstrated the booster elicited “a significant immune response” against both Omicron (BA.1) and the original 2020 virus, the agency made its conclusion.

6. Satish Kashinath Marathe, Swaminathan Gurumurthy, Revathy Iyer, and Sachin Chaturvedi have all been nominated by the national government to continue serving as part-time, non-official directors on the central board of the Reserve Bank of India.
◉ Gurumurthy and Marathe have been renominated by the RBI for another term of four years, up until further directives from the central board of the RBI, according to information on the RBI website.

7. SBI opened its first branch specifically to assist new businesses.
◉ In Koramangala, Bengaluru, the largest lender in the nation, the State Bank of India (SBI), has opened its first branch specifically for startups.
◉ From the early stages of start-up development to initial public offerings and follow-on public offerings, the branch will offer assistance in these areas.
◉ SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara opened the branch, which is close to the largest start-up clusters in the city, HSR Layout, and Indiranagar, in Koramangala.
Following Bengaluru, Gurgaon will host the next location, and Hyderabad will host the third.

8. NaBFID names Rajkiran Rai as its new MD.
◉ Rajkiran Rai G has been appointed as the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development’s (NaBFID) Managing Director (MD) for a period of five years by the organization’s centre and board.
◉ K V Kamath was chosen by the Center to lead NaBFID last October 2021.
Pankaj Jain and Sumita Dawra were subsequently appointed as board directors.

9. Kenya elects William Ruto as its new president.
◉ Kenya’s deputy president William Ruto has been chosen to lead the nation as president.
◉ He defeated longtime opposition leader and former prime minister Raila Odinga with 50.49% of the vote (contesting his fifth election).
◉ He succeeds as Kenya’s fifth president since independence with this victory.
◉ The upper branch of the parliament, the Senate of Kenya, now has a majority of seats obtained by his party, the Kenya Kwanza alliance.

10. Awards presented at the 2022 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM)
◉ The 13th Melbourne Indian Film Festival kicked off on August 12 and will end on August 30, 2022.
◉ The annual celebration of the Indian cinema industry in Australia features screenings of some of the most well-known and highly regarded movies, television programs, and online series produced in India.
◉ The Best Film award was given to “83.”
◉ For the films “Sardar Udham” and “The Rapist,” respectively, Shoojit Sircar and Aparna Sen received Best Director awards.

11. Veer Durgadas Rathore’s Marwari warrior statue is unveiled by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
◉ On his 385th birthday, Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, erected the statue of Veer Durgadas Rathore in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
◉ On this special occasion, the Raksha Mantri praised Veer Durgadas Rathore and referred to him as the embodiment of social harmony, integrity, bravery, and dedication.
◉ He said that Veer Durgadas Rathore, who fought for peace and unity against dividing elements in society, should serve as an example for all people, regardless of caste or religion.

12. India celebrates 75 years of independence by raising its flag in space.
◉ As the nation celebrated its 75th anniversary of independence, the Indian flag was flown in space at a height of nearly 30 miles. Orbit Kidz India, which bills itself as an aerospace organization developing young scientists for the nation, sent the tricolor into space on a balloon.
◉ As part of the festivities marking 75 years since India’s independence, the flag was unfurled as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
◉ Young scientists are being developed for India by Space Kidz India, a group that also educates kids about living in a borderless world. A satellite for the organization was just launched into low Earth orbit.

13. Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s death anniversary is on August 16.
◉ Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s fourth death anniversary was on August 16, 2022.
◉ Former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee was chosen for the post twice, in 1996 and 1999. In 2018, he passed away.
◉ Vajpayee served as India’s prime minister for three terms between 1998 and 2004, starting with a brief stint in 1996.
◉ In 1992, he received the Padma Vibhushan award.
◉ On December 25, 2015, his birthday, he received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. The Narendra Modi administration has also designated today as Good Governance Day.


Obituary


14. Amitabh Choudhary, a former BCCI secretary, passed away.
◉ Amitabh Chaudhary, 58, died. He was the president of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) and a former acting secretary of the BCCI.
He managed the Indian team in Zimbabwe from 2005 to 2006 and served as acting secretary of the BCCI until 2019.
◉ He was a retired senior IPS officer who worked for the Jharkhand Police and attained the position of IGP. He also served as the head of the state’s public service commission.
◉ He was instrumental in creating the Jharkhand cricket infrastructure.
