Current Affairs of 31st July – National News


1. PM Modi unveiled the Redesigned Distribution Sector Program.
◉ The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, the Power Ministry’s main program, was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
◉ During a function celebrating the completion of “Ujjwal Bharat Ujjwal Bhavishya – Power @2047,” Modi introduced the program.
◉ The plan intends to increase the power departments and distribution companies’ (DISCOMs’) operational effectiveness and financial viability.

2. Gujarat becomes the first state to develop a policy on semiconductors.
◉ A specific “Gujarat Semiconductor Policy 2022–27” has been released by the Gujarati government.
◉ Gujarat has now established itself as the nation’s first state with a specific semiconductor policy.
◉ This new program provides numerous incentives and subsidies to support the production of semiconductors.
◉ According to the plan, the state government would establish “Dholera Semicon City” close to Ahmedabad, where qualified projects will receive financial assistance for the construction of industrial facilities.

3. Singapore became the nation bringing in the most foreign direct investment in India in FY22.
◉ In terms of FDI inflows into India in FY2021-22, Singapore, the USA, Mauritius, the Netherlands, and Switzerland have emerged as the top 5 countries.
◉ With a contribution of 1%, Singapore has emerged as the top source nation, followed by the USA at 17.94%.
◉ Following the top two countries are Mauritius, The Netherlands, and Switzerland, with contributions of 15.98%, 7.86%, and 7.31%, respectively.

4. An MoU was signed between Malaysian and Indian organizations to promote palm oil.
◉ The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) and the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA) have signed an MoU to expand their collaboration in promoting the usage of palm oil.
◉ The Malaysian Sustainability Palm Oil (MSPO) accreditation requirements, which serve as a baseline for Malaysian palm oil, are another goal of the MoU.
◉ The MoU intends to enhance the general understanding of palm oil and its applications while explaining its strengths and benefits. It also wants to assist in educating Indian consumers on the nutritional and health benefits of palm oil.

5. Amit Shah, a minister for the union, opened a seminar on drug trafficking.
◉ Inaugurating the seminar on drug trafficking and national security at Punjab Raj Bhavan is Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Shah also started a number of development initiatives.
◉ At the conference, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) teams from Delhi, Chennai, Guwahati, and Kolkata would burn and dispose of more than 30,000 kg of drugs.
◉ Over 51,217 kg of drugs have been disposed of by the NCB since the campaign’s launch on June 1 in 11 states.

6. To combat inflation, Zimbabwe introduced gold coins as legal tender.
◉ Zimbabwe’s central bank has introduced gold coins to combat the nation’s skyrocketing inflation.
◉ The coin is known as “Mosi-oa-Tunya,” which in the native Tongan language translates to Victoria Falls.
◉ The coins will be marketable both locally and globally and will be classified as liquid assets, making it simple to convert them into cash.
◉ At the time of inception, one coin cost $1,824.

7. India has selected Pranay Verma as its new High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
◉ The next high commissioner of India to Bangladesh has been named by seasoned diplomat Pranay Verma. Verma is an Indian Foreign Service officer from the 1994 batch.
◉ He is now the ambassador of India to Vietnam.
◉ He will succeed Vikram Doraiswami, the incumbent high commissioner.
◉ When Doraiswami becomes the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, she will take over.

8. Indian Navy receives the first indigenous aircraft carrier, named “Vikrant”
◉ The Cochin Shipyard Limited has given the Indian Navy control of the nation’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, Vikrant.
◉ The carrier is 262 meters long and can carry 45,000 tonnes in its entirety. The aircraft carrier can reach a top speed of 28 knots and is propelled by 88 Mega Watts worth of gas turbines.
◉ The Ministry of Defense and the CSL worked together on the construction of the Vikrant over the course of three phases. By 2007, the first phase had been finished, followed by the second in December 2014 and the final one in October 2019. Its construction cost somewhere about Rs. 20,000 crores.

9. The USA donated two MH 60R multi-role helicopters to the Indian Navy.
◉ Two MH 60R multi-role helicopters were delivered by the US to the Indian Navy at the Cochin International Airport.
◉ All 24 MH 60R helicopters will be delivered by the end of 2025, with the third helicopter due to arrive in August of this year.
◉ Under its Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, the United States authorized the sale of 24 MH-60R multi-mission helicopters to India in 2019.

10. UAE will host the Asia Cup in 2022 instead of Sri Lanka.
◉ Due to the political and economic crises in Sri Lanka, the Asian Cricket Council declared that the Asia Cup 2022 would henceforth be held in the United Arab Emirates instead of Sri Lanka.
◉ The 15th edition of the Asia Cup will take place from August 27 to September 11, 2022.
◉ The event will include a total of 6 teams. (Hong Kong, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka)

11. The official tagline for the Paris Olympics 2024 is “Games Wide Open.”
◉ “Games Wide Open” was unveiled as the official tagline for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
◉ Paris will play host to the Summer Olympics for the third time in 2024 after 1900 and 1924.
◉ The 2024 Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11, according to the timetable.
◉ In 32 different sports, athletes will participate in a total of 329 events.
