Current Affairs of 18th December – National News


1. Launching the Surat Diamond Exchange was PM Modi.
◉ The largest office in the world, the Surat Diamond Exchange, was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
◉ Completed in July at a cost of ₹ 32 billion, it has a construction area of 6.7 million square feet. The US landmark is 6.5 million square feet in size and was first inaugurated in 1943.
◉ Modern “Customs Clearance Houses” for import-export, a jewelry mall for retail jewelry firms, an international banking facility, and safe vaults are all part of the bourse.
◉ Mumbai has long been India’s hub for diamond exports, but Surat, dubbed “Diamond City,” is where most of the world’s raw diamonds are cut, accounting for 90% of the total.

2. The list of international airports now includes Surat.
◉ The proposal to designate Surat Airport as an international airport has been approved by the Union Cabinet.
◉ In addition to serving as a gateway for international travel, Surat Airport will enable smooth export-import operations for the booming textile and diamond sectors.
◉ The international standing of the airport is crucial for boosting economic expansion, drawing in foreign capital, and igniting regional development.
◉ The late Morarji Desai, a Valsad native who served as prime minister from 1957 to 1980 and was elected from the Surat Lok Sabha seat, may have his name attached to the airport.

3. Government-run “Krishi Udan” scheme covers 58 airports.
◉ According to the government, 58 airports nationwide are protected under the Krishi Udan Scheme.
◉ The Program was introduced in 2020 to help farmers transport agricultural products to enhance their value realization on both domestic and international routes.
◉ This was said by Dr. V K Singh, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, in a written response to a Rajya Sabha question.
◉ Additionally, in 2021, the Krishi Udan Scheme 2.0 was unveiled, with an emphasis on moving perishable food items from hilly, northeastern, and tribal regions.
◉ Along with 33 airports in other regions/areas, the project currently covers 25 airports with an emphasis on the North Eastern, Hilly, and Tribal regions.

4. In New Delhi, the 67th National School Games got underway.
◉ The 67th National School Games were officially opened at Chhatrasal Stadium in New Delhi by Delhi Education Minister Atishi.
◉ Atishi emphasized during the National School Games’ opening that combining sports and education is essential for fostering national development.
◉ Students showcasing their athletic prowess and talent come from 44 units, including states, union territories, and other boards.
◉ This year, the games will be held in the Directorate of Education.

International News


5. Beginning in2025, Denmark will impose a green tax on travelers.
◉ To support the airline industry’s gradual transition to greener practices beginning in 2025, Denmark has decided to impose a tax on flying passengers.
◉ To support the aviation industry’s green transition—which seeks to enable all domestic flights to use 100% sustainable fuels by 2030—the government proposed in November to impose an average levy on air travel of 100 Danish crowns ($14.35).
◉ According to the agreement, the fee will increase to about 50 Danish crowns ($7.35) per passenger for intra-European travel, 310 crowns for travel over medium distances, and 410 crowns for travel over long distances by 2030.
◉ The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that a study indicates that aviation is responsible for 3.5% of global warming.

6. The RBI permits Bandhan Bank to pay railroad personnel pensions.
◉ The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted Bandhan Bank permission to distribute pension funds via electronic payment plans (e-PPOs) on behalf of the Ministry of Railways.
◉ With this authority, Bandhan Bank can pay pensions to all Ministry of Railways personnel who have retired from their jobs.
◉ Additionally, this mission gives the Bank access to around 50,000 Indian Railways retirees annually from all offices, including the company’s eight manufacturing units and 17 zonal railways.

7. ICICI Pru Life and Ujjivan SFB Form Partnership for Bancassurance
◉ A bancassurance relationship has been established between ICICI Prudential Life Insurance (ICICI PruLife) and Ujjivan Small Finance Bank (Ujjivan SFB) to distribute life insurance products.
◉ Goal: To give aspirant middle-class people more access to insurance options so they can safeguard their finances.
◉ Through its network of more than 700 branches spread across 26 states and Union Territories, Ujjivan SFB will provide its clients with the full range of protection, long-term savings, and retirement products offered by ICICI PruLife as part of this agreement.

◉ While Saloni Rammohan of Pennsylvania earned the title of Miss Teen India USA, Sneha Nambiar of Massachusetts was crowned Mrs. India USA.
◉ Maini is a model and a 24-year-old Indian-American medical student. Her goal is to become a surgeon and become an inspiration to all women.
◉ The first runner-up was Greeshma Bhat from Virginia, while the second runner-up was Ishita Pai Raikar from North Carolina.
