1. Tamil Nadu’s “Jallikattu” Bull-Taming Festival Begins
◉ At the village of Avaniyapuram in the Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, a vibrant state in South India known for its cultural diversity and traditional celebrations, began the Jallikattu competition.
◉ The bull-taming sport of Jallikattu, a highlight of the Pongal harvest festival held in the second week of January, is set to expand its excitement over three days, with Avaniyapuram hosting the first day, Palamedu hosting the second, and Alanganallur hosting the third. The sport’s origins date back approximately 2,000 years, demonstrating a deep-rooted connection to Tamil Nadu’s cultural fabric. Originally used to choose appropriate bridegrooms, the ceremony has grown to represent bravery and tradition.

2. The Center for Policy Research’s FCRA Registration is revoked by the Ministry of Home Affairs
◉ The Center for Policy Research (CPR) in New Delhi has had its registration under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Act, 2020 withdrawn by the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs, citing infractions.
◉ Yamini Aiyar, the daughter of Congressman Mani Shankar Aiyar, is managing a major public policy research firm that has come under government inquiry for allegedly breaking FCRA standards.
◉ CPR’s FCRA license was temporarily suspended by the government last year for a term of 180 days, which was later extended by an additional 180 days.
◉ CPR, a well-known policy think-tank founded in 1973, is renowned for its cutting-edge research on a wide range of policy topics, with an emphasis on the difficulties India faces in the twenty-first century.

3. India Will Start Its Annual “Ramayan” Festival in Delhi
◉ India is going to start a year-long festival to celebrate Ramadan and its cultural importance to foster global ties.
◉ The celebration is slated to begin on January 18 at Delhi’s historic Purana Qila (Old Fort) and travel across other towns, including Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Lucknow.
◉ A wide range of activities are planned for the “Year of Connecting the World Through Ramayana,” which will begin with the inaugural week at Purana Qila on January 18–24. Ballet performances, lectures, and interactive arts and crafts shows with a Ramayana theme are all part of the celebrations.

4. Draft Guidelines for Fintech Self-Regulatory Organizations Are Released by RBI
◉ A draft framework for the creation and acceptance of self-regulatory organizations (SROs) in the fintech industry has been made public by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
◉ The proposed regulations seek to achieve a balance between encouraging sector innovation and guaranteeing that consumer safety and risk containment are given priority under the law.
◉ FinTech companies should be eligible to join the SRO-FT voluntarily to guarantee wide industry representation. The SRO-FT must be acknowledged as the principal body in charge of establishing norms of behavior and market standards.

5. Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty Takes Up a Position at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, as Commandant
◉ On January 15, 2024, Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty took over the esteemed role of Commandant at the Indian Naval Academy.
◉ After being commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1989, Vice Admiral McCarty’s adventure began. He has made a name for himself throughout the years by taking on a variety of positions and duties, demonstrating outstanding leadership and commitment to the country.
◉ Early in his career, Vice Admiral McCarty made clear that “gunnery and missiles” was his area of expertise. He demonstrated his mastery of naval armament and technology by serving as a member of the commissioning crew of INS Delhi and completing specialist tenures onboard a frontline-guided missile destroyer.

6. The 2023 India International Science Festival Begins Today
◉ Today, January 17, marks the start of the four-day celebration of India’s achievements in cutting-edge science and technology known as the India International Science Festival (IISF) 2023.
◉ The National Innovation Foundation-India and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India are coordinating IISF 2023, which aims to promote scientific temper, recognize accomplishments, and raise awareness among Indians.
◉ “Science and Technology Public Outreach in Amrit Kaal” is IISF 2023’s main focus. This subject emphasizes outreach programs that advance societal improvement while highlighting the significance of public participation in science and technology.

7. Pixxel Opens MegaPixxel, A Cutting-Edge Satellite Production Facility In Bangalore
◉ On January 15, Pixxel, a Bengaluru-based space tech business, celebrated the opening of “MegaPixxel,” a state-of-the-art spacecraft production facility.
◉ The 30,000-square-foot facility has the potential to completely transform India’s capacity for producing satellites. With its capabilities, MegaPixxel can offer a full range of satellite manufacturing services, including assembly, integration, and testing (AIT) of spacecraft all under one roof.
◉ Two state-of-the-art clean rooms at MegaPixxel that meet ISO Class 7 and Class 8 regulations provide a regulated atmosphere to protect against impurities during satellite assembly and integration.

8. Viswanathan Anand was surpassed by Praggnanandhaa to become the top chess player in India.
◉ Ramesh Babu The 18-year-old Chennai chess prodigy Praggnanandhaa made history in his career by defeating China’s World Champion Ding Liren.
◉ In addition to being a personal triumph, Praggnanandhaa’s victory over Ding Liren propelled him above the illustrious Viswanathan Anand as the highest-ranked Indian player.
◉ Praggnanandhaa just managed to surpass Anand’s rating of 2748 with a FIDE live rating of 2748.3. With this accomplishment, Praggnanandhaa becomes the second Indian, after Anand, to beat the current world champion in classical chess. In 2023, he had already triumphed over Ding Liren at the Tata Steel competition.
