Current Affairs of 12th February – National News


1. India will host the Miss World pageant from February 18 to March 9.
◉ India will host the 71st Miss World pageant from February 18 to March 9.
◉ After over thirty years, the highly anticipated international beauty pageant is returning to the nation with its most recent edition.
◉ The India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) in New Delhi will host “The Opening Ceremony” and “India Welcomes the World Gala” to kick off the pageant on February 20.
◉ It will be webcast and broadcast worldwide, culminating in a grand finale on March 9 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.

2. In Delhi, Vice President Dhankhar opens the World Sustainable Development Summit.
◉ In the presence of Union Minister for Environment, Forests, and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav and Prime Minister of Guyana Mark Phillips, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar opened the World Sustainable Development Summit in New Delhi.
◉ Goal: Encourage the mainstreaming of climate justice and environmental conservation at all levels so that these ideas become ingrained in our society as a whole.
◉ The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) was in charge of organizing the summit.

3. The 67th All India Police Duty Meet (AIPDM) will take place in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, at the invitation of the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
◉ The dates of it are February 12–16, 2024.
◉ The Union Minister of Railways, Communications, and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, will be the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony on February 12.
◉ On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Shri Yogi Adityanath, will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony on February 16.

4. South East Railway and Tata Steel collaborate to create green infrastructure
◉ Using its slag-based aggregates, South Eastern Railway (SER) and private steel company Tata Steel will collaborate to create sustainable rail infrastructure.
◉ Railway blanketing layers will be built using Tata Aggreto, a more environmentally friendly alternative to natural aggregates used in road building, and Tata Nirman, a raw material used to make fly ash bricks and cement.
◉ To turn steel slag into environmentally friendly aggregates, Tata Steel has established an accelerated weathering facility that uses steam ageing to handle LD slag.

5. Interest Rate on PF Deposits Increased by EPFO to 8.25%
◉ The interest rate on provident fund deposits set by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) for 2023–2024 is set at 25%, which is the highest in the previous three years.
◉ The retirement fund body promised 8.15% interest for 2022–2023 as opposed to 8.10% for 2021–2022.
◉ The interest rate on provident fund deposits was lowered by the EPFO in March 2020 from 8.65 percent in 2018–19 to a seven-year low of 8.5 percent for 2019–20.

6. RBI Grants Decentro, Zoho, and Juspay Payment Aggregator Licenses
◉ The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted final permission for software-as-a-service provider Zoho, fintech companies Juspay and Decentro, and to function as payment aggregators.
◉ With this, the three players join big fintech giants like Razorpay and Cashfree which obtained licenses last year, as well as companies like Stripe, Zomato, and Tata Pay that were on the regulator’s list of approved companies in January.
◉ By receiving payment instruments from clients, a payments aggregator, or PA, a license enables enterprises to offer payment services to merchants, or internet businesses, or e-commerce corporations.

7. IRS Officer Narendra Kumar Yadav has been named a Fit India Movement Brand Ambassador.
◉ The Fit India campaign is a major effort of the Indian government, and its new brand ambassador is IRS officer Narendra Kumar Yadav, Additional Director GST.
◉ Under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Center started the Fit India movement, a national campaign to encourage Indians to incorporate sports and physical activity into their everyday life.

8. Swiss tourism honors Neeraj Chopra with a plaque at the Ice Palace of the Jungfrau.
◉ Neeraj Chopra, the javelin thrower from India who won gold in the Olympics and the world championship, has received a plaque at the renowned Ice Palace at Jungfraujoch, also referred to as the “Top of Europe,” in Switzerland.
◉ Chopra’s outstanding achievements were acknowledged by Jungfraujoch, who invited the sporting legend to unveil the memorial plaque.
◉ The spirit of achievement and commitment is demonstrated by the Wall of Fame at Jungfraujoch.

9. WHO sends NIMHANS Nelson Mandela Prize for the Promotion of Health
◉ The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) as the recipient of the 2024 Nelson Mandela Award (NMA) for Health Promotion.
◉ Established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019, the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion honors people, organizations, and governmental or non-governmental groups that have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of health.
◉ This year, NIMHANS and Professor Bontle Mbongwe of Botswana received the honor together.

10. Australia raises the trophy for the Under-19 Men’s World Cup. 2024
◉ Australia defeated India by 79 runs in the championship match of the Under 19 Men’s ODI World Cup, which was held in Benoni, South Africa.
◉ This is Australia’s fourth title. Australians had previously won the championship in 1988, 2002, and 2010.
◉ India, on the other hand, is the reigning U19 World Cup champion and has won the competition five times: in 2000, 2008, 2012, 2018, and 2022.
◉ Team India was all out for 174 runs in 43.5 overs while chasing a goal of 254 runs.
Australia had earlier finished the allotted 50 overs with a total of 253 for 7 wickets.

◉ Every year on February 12th, India celebrates National Productivity Day, a day honoring the establishment of the National Productivity Council (NPC).
