1. Changes to India’s Election Commissioner Appointment Process are Proposed by a New Bill
◉ Recently, the Indian federal government filed a measure in the Rajya Sabha that seeks to alter the selection procedure for the nation’s Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. Significant alterations to the selection committee’s makeup are included in the draft legislation that would make these appointments.
◉ The removal of the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee that decides who gets appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners is one of the bill’s notable amendments.

2. India aims to triple its natural gas share to 15% by 2030, according to the Minister
◉ India is starting a brave journey to increase the natural gas component of its energy mix from its present 6% to a strong 15% by the year 2030. Rameswar Teli, the Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas, is in charge of leading this bold initiative.
◉ The National Gas Grid Pipeline’s extension, which creates a vast network for effective natural gas distribution across the country, is a crucial step. Another factor is the construction of LNG terminals, which will make it easier to import and store liquefied natural gas to fulfill the rising demand.

3. Unionized Government Workers March for Pension Rights in Delhi
◉ The “Pension Rights Maharally,” a sizable rally in Delhi organized by government employee unions, would be used to make the Old Pension Scheme’s reinstatement demand.
◉ The Joint Forum for Restoration of Old Pension Scheme (JFROPS)/National Joint Council of Action (NJCA), which represents employees in central and state departments, organized the demonstration. On August 10, the occasion happened at Ramlila Maidan.

4. The 2023 Bharatiya Sakshya Bill: Restructuring Union for the Criminal Justice System of India ◉ Three new pieces of legislation to improve India’s criminal justice system were introduced in the Lok Sabha by Home Minister Amit Shah. The Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, one of these measures, seeks to replace the antiquated Indian Evidence Act of 1872.
◉ To ensure a fair trial in criminal instances, the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023, aims to assemble and establish general standards and principles of evidence.
◉ The current Indian Evidence Act is archaic and devoid of clauses that take into account the contemporary environment. By updating the laws governing evidence and bringing them into line with the public’s present requirements and ambitions, the new bill seeks to correct this.

5. The majority of cancer cases are reported in Uttar Pradesh.
◉ Uttar Pradesh recorded the greatest number of cancer cases in India, according to data from the Indian Council of Medical Research Cancer Registry. The state recorded a startling 210,000 new cases in 2022, a considerable increase from the 201,000 instances registered in 2020.
◉ With a startling 116,818 people losing their lives to this terrible disease, Uttar Pradesh also recorded the greatest number of cancer-related deaths. While Maharashtra came in second in terms of deaths, Uttar Pradesh’s mortality rate was comparable to the national average.

6. CM Solar Mission launched with insufficient power in Meghalaya
◉ The Chief Minister’s Solar Mission was introduced by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma as a key step toward utilizing renewable energy sources and eliminating power shortages. ◉ The mission is expected to revolutionize the state’s energy environment and support its sustainable growth, with funding from the government totaling Rs 500 crore over the next five years.
◉ Net metering is expected to complement this ambitious growth strategy by enabling greater capacity hybrid solar modules to flow electricity into both local and national grids. With private homes eligible for a 70% subsidy and schools, hospitals, hotels, and commercial enterprises eligible for a 50% subsidy, the subsidy structure is intended to encourage a wide range of beneficiaries.

7. PTE results for applicants to the Student Direct Stream are now accepted in Canada.
◉ The Canadian government’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has formally approved the use of Pearson’s PTE Academic test as a measure of English language ability, which is a significant move for overseas students hoping to study there.
◉ The IRCC made a significant choice earlier this year when it approved Pearson’s PTE Academic as a reliable indicator of English language competency. This action strengthens the legitimacy and widespread acceptance of this language proficiency exam by recognizing the high standards and accuracy of the PTE Academic assessment.

8. Abhay K, a poet, and diplomat releases his new book, “Monsoon.”
◉ Abhay Kumar (Abhay K), an Indian poet and diplomat who serves as the deputy director general of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), published a book-length poem with 150 four-line stanzas titled “Monsoon: A Poem of Love and Longing” at the Kathika Culture Center in Old Delhi, Delhi.
◉ On March 13, 2022, Sahitya Akademi will celebrate its 68th anniversary by publishing the book. The monsoon goes from Madagascar to Srinagar in the Himalayas and back to Madagascar in the book, which is poetry.
