Current Affairs of 16th December – National News


1. Gamocha receives a GI tag in Assam.
◉ The Gamosa of Assam, Tandur Redgram of Telangana, and an apricot variety from Ladakh are just a few of the items that have received Geographical Indications (GI) Tags from the government.
◉ Literally meaning “towel,” the Assamese word “gamocha” is frequently used in daily life.
The trade and industry ministry reported that there are now 432 GI in total.
◉ Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka are the top five states with the most GIs.
◉ The government has approved the spending of 75 crores for three years for the promotion of awareness programs, supporting the promotion of GIs.

2. 32nd Board of Directors meeting of the National Horticulture Board (NHB) led by Narendra Tomar Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar presided over the meeting in New Delhi.
◉ It was determined to make it easier for farmers to get their horticultural projects approved.
◉ The approval procedure will now be done in one step rather than two, be entirely digital, need the fewest number of documents possible, and result in no issues for the farmers.
◉ Significantly, many projects that previously took 6 to 8 months to be approved will now do so in just 45 days.

3. In Kerala, Nitin Gadkari opened 12 NH development projects.
◉ Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways has officially opened and laid the cornerstone for 12 National Highway construction projects in Kerala totaling 40,453 crore rupees.
◉ The Travancore International Convention Centre at the Karyavattom Sports Hub in Thiruvananthapuram is where the event is being held.
◉ The National Highways Authority of India is in charge of carrying out the projects, which span 403 km inside Kerala.

4. For Beypore Uru, a Geographical Indication tag is desired.
◉ For the renowned Beypore Uru, the District Tourism Promotion Council in Kozhikode, Kerala, has requested a Geographical Indication (GI) tag (boat).
◉ Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala are the top 5 states with the most GI tags.
◉ With this, there are now 432 GI tags in India as a whole.

5. France provides India with the 36th and final Rafale aircraft.
◉ All 36 Rafale aircraft were delivered to India by France, with the last one touching down.
◉ After taking off from France, the aircraft received a brief on-route mid-air refueling from a UAE Air Force tanker aircraft, according to the Indian Air Force.
◉ In 2016, India and France struck an intergovernmental agreement wherein Paris committed to pay India 60,000 crore rupees for 36 Rafale fighter jets.

6. Tokyo mandates solar panels for all new residences constructed after 2025.
◉ To reduce domestic carbon emissions, the Tokyo local assembly has passed a new law requiring the installation of solar power panels in all new homes constructed in Tokyo by large-scale homebuilders from April 2025.
◉ Japan is the fifth-largest carbon emitter in the world. By 2050, the nation intends to become carbon neutral.

7. In November, Russia took over as India’s leading oil supplier from Iraq.
◉ For the first time, Russia has emerged as India’s main oil supplier, taking the place of Iraq in November 2022.
◉ India’s daily oil imports from Russia increased for the fifth consecutive month in November, reaching 908,000 bpd, a 4% increase over the previous month.
◉ The price of Russian seaborne oil will be capped at $60 per barrel starting in December by the Group of Seven countries, Australia, and the 27 member states of the European Union in an effort by the West to reduce Moscow’s capacity to fund its conflict in Ukraine.
◉ India imported roughly 4 million bpd of oil overall in November, and about 23 percent of it came from Russia.

8. G-7 agreed to a contract with Vietnam for 15.5 billion US dollars.
◉ Vietnam will get 15.5 billion US dollars from a group of nine wealthy industrialized nations as part of an agreement to help the Southeast Asian country switch from coal power to renewable energy more quickly and reduce its climate-damaging emissions.
◉ Vietnam will receive assistance from the Group of Seven major countries, Norway, and Denmark to cut its emissions to “net zero” by 2050.
◉ Experts agree that limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius requires worldwide action.

9. In Saljhandi, the 16th iteration of the India and Nepal Joint Training Exercise Surya Kiran gets underway.
◉ From December 16 to December 29, 2022, the 16th Indo-Nepal joint training exercise “SURYA KIRAN-XVI” between India and Nepal will begin at the Nepal Army Battle School in Saljhandi (Nepal).
◉ The military exercise between India and Nepal will be held with the goal of improving the interoperability of both armies in carrying out operations in accordance with the UN mandate.
◉ The 5 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army will participate in the yearly drill, and the Shree Bhawani Baksh Battalion will provide the Nepalese side’s representation.

◉ Every year on December 16, India celebrates Vijay Diwas to remember its triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 conflict that resulted in the formation of Bangladesh as an independent country.
