Current Affairs of 9th January – National News


1. In West Bengal, the Gangasagar Mela commences.
◉ Bengal (West) The Gangasagar Mela has been officially opened by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
◉ The Mela will run through January 17th. The dates of the “Shahi Snan” are January 15 and 16.
In Sagar, the Chief Minister has also officially opened nine projects.
◉ To designate Gangasagar Mela as a heritage monument, the state administration has written a letter to UNESCO. This year, pilgrims will not be required to pay pilgrimage tax; instead, they will all receive insurance worth five lakh rupees.

2. By 2024, 68 Rajya Sabha members will have retired.
◉ Nine Union ministers and 68 Rajya Sabha members are ending their terms this year, which has led to a type of competition among political party leaders to secure a six-year term in the Upper House of Parliament.
◉ Three seats in Delhi, where AAP leaders Sanjay Singh, Narain Dass Gupta, and Sushil Kumar Gupta will finish their terms on January 27, have already seen elections called out of the 68 available seats.
◉ Up to 57 officials will finish their terms in April, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, environment minister Bhupendra Yadav, health minister Mansukh Madaviya, education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and minister of railways Ashwini Vaishnaw.

3. Pharma park to be established in Uttar Pradesh
◉ The Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) reports that the state government of Uttar Pradesh plans to establish a pharmaceutical park at Lalitpur, Bundelkhand, spanning 1,472 acres across five villages.
◉ The plan will be implemented in two stages. The first will concentrate on urgent development activities including 300 acres of land.
Saidpur (426 acres), Gadolikala (249 acres), Largan (239 acres), Karounda (116 acres), and Rampur (441 acres) are the villages that have been selected for the survey.
◉ The government of Uttar Pradesh has made a calculated step to promote industrial growth and economic development with the creation of the Pharma Park and the acceleration of related initiatives.

4. Union Cabinet Approves India-Guyana Hydrocarbon Sector Memorandum of Understanding
◉ The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector between the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, India, and Natural Resources, Guyana, has been authorized by the Union Cabinet, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
◉ The proposed Memorandum of Understanding highlights the breadth of cooperation between the two countries by encompassing a wide variety of collaboration across the hydrocarbon value chain.
◉ The Memorandum of Understanding with Guyana is expected to enhance bilateral commerce, promote investment between the two nations, and contribute to the diversification of crude oil sources, thereby bolstering the nation’s energy and supply security.

◉ The formal designation of the snow leopard as Kyrgyzstan’s national symbol highlights the country’s dedication to ecological balance and protection.
◉ The snow leopard, which makes up one-third of the world’s landmass, is a symbol of both natural wealth and cultural success. It also serves as an indicator of the stability and health of the mountain ecosystem.
◉ The endangered species of snow leopard poses a threat to the delicate ecological balance, resulting in negative consequences for both people and other animal species.

6. Fino Payments Bank submits an SFB license application to RBI.
◉ To obtain a license as a small finance bank, Fino Payments Bank has applied to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
◉ Fino Payments Bank Limited submitted one application to the RBI under the Guidelines for “on tap” licensing of small finance banks in the private sector, dated December 5, 2019, for the quarter that ended December 31, 2023.
◉ As per the criteria, payment banks were eligible to apply conversion into SFB after five years of operation, provided they fulfilled additional guidelines stipulated by the RBI. In addition, the bank needs to have a minimum net worth of Rs 200 crore or paid-up voting equity capital.

7. Geetika Mehta Is Selected as the new MD by NIVEA India
◉ Geetika Mehta has been named the new Managing Director (MD) of Nivea India. She now becomes one of the increasing numbers of women leading fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) businesses.
◉ Mehta formerly held the position of MD at Hershey India for 2.5 years. Before that, she worked for 18 years with Hindustan Unilever, the biggest FMCG company in the nation.
◉ Having had a remarkable career in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry, Geetika has demonstrated experience growing small firms and overseeing major enterprises in South Asia, Thailand, Brazil, and South Africa.
◉ Her broad background and astute strategic vision perfectly complement Nivea India’s goal of giving customers better products that are consistent with its care offering.

8. In Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina secures a fifth term. PM
◉ The announcement of Sheikh Hasina’s reelection for a fifth term as prime minister of Bangladesh represents a critical turning point in the political climate of the nation.
◉ Under Hasina’s direction, the ruling Awami League has triumphed once more, gaining over half of the parliamentary seats.
◉ Sheikh Hasina’s status as the longest-serving female leader of state in history is confirmed by this triumph.
◉ Finding a parliamentary opposition became problematic as independent candidates, rather than representatives of any political party, won 63 seats in total—the second-highest number after Hasina’s Awami League (AL), which won 222.

9. Aruna Nayar assumes the role of Railway Board Secretary.
◉ The Railway Board Secretary position has been given to Aruna Nayar. She is an empanelled Level-16 Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) officer and a 1987 Batch IRPS officer.
◉ Before May 2023, Nayar held positions with the Railway Board as an Additional Member of Staff and Principal Executive Director/Staff, respectively, from February 2022 to May 2023.
◉ In addition, Nayar is the first IRPS officer with a Level-16 IRMS empanelle.
◉ In addition to serving in various roles at the Railway Recruitment Board (Chennai), the Railway Divisions of Chennai & Palghat, the Golden Rock Workshop & Division at Tiruchirapalli, and the Eastern Railway, Nayar has held positions as Principal Chief Personnel Officer (PCPO), Dy. CPO, Metro Railway/Kolkata, PCPO, and Southern Railway.

◉ India observes Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), also known as NRI Day, on January 9 of each year.
◉ This day honors Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, who returned to India in 1915 to fight for independence from South Africa.
◉ Honoring the Overseas Indian community, who have made major contributions to the nation’s progress, is one of the primary goals of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
